CLASS: Basic Socks

Tuesdays, Oct. 22 & 29 (must attend both sessions), 6-8 PM
Class fee: $50 + class materials
Socks are one of our shop community’s favorite portable projects - they’re small, easy to pause work on when you have an interruption, and amazing at helping keep your feet dry and warm in our cool, rainy autumn and winter seasons. But if you’ve never made a pair before, the tiny yarn and all the new terminology can be overwhelming.
If you need more support than you’re finding on YouTube, join us for Basic Socks - we use a free, tutorial-rich pattern from Tin Can Knits and worsted-weight yarn to get through a child-sized sock quickly - and at a large-enough scale to see what you’re doing at each step in the process.
After this class, you’ll be able to:
- Use the Old Norwegian / German Twisted cast-on
- Work a top-down sock with flap-and-gusset construction
- Graft live stitches together
Skills required:
- Knit, purl, basic increases, basic decreases
- Work in the round
- Read a standard knitting pattern
- Read your work (can you tell your knits from your purls?)
Materials required:
- US3 / 3.25 mm double-pointed needles OR needles for either Magic Loop or 2-circulars-at-a-time
- US5 / 3.75mm double-pointed needles AND any other US 5 / 3.75mm needles used to work small circumference
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle
- 1 ball of Ultra Wool (100% superwash wool) or Vintage (machine-washable blend of wool, nylon, and acrylic) in a light color - you may also use yarn from your stash, but if the instructor deems it inappropriate for class, we will ask you to purchase yarn before instruction starts.
