No matter where you find your crochet inspiration, mosaic crochet is on the top of the “most popular projects” lists everywhere right now. It looks incredibly difficult, but if you can make extended stitches and count your stitches, you can do it! In this class, you’ll be making a simple 2-color placemat in worsted-weight yarn to learn the basics of mosaic crochet; it’s a free pattern from Yarnspirations. We’ll talk a little bit about color theory and making sure your colors contrast enough to see your mosaic pattern, too.
After this class, you’ll be able to:
- Navigate basic mosaic crochet techniques
- Determine whether or not you have yarns that contrast enough to make the mosaic pattern visible
- Learn how to read one type of mosaic crochet pattern chart (optional)
Skills required:
- Chain, single crochet, double crochet stitches
- Able to “read” your work - can you count stitches, identify chain spaces, and get a general sense of whether or not your stitches are lining up?
- Read a basic crochet pattern
Materials required:
- US H / 5.0mm crochet hook - if you are a loose crocheter, consider going down 2 hooks from the size you’d normally use with worsted-weight yarn; if you are a tight crocheter, do NOT go up a size! The visibility of the motifs improves with slightly denser fabric than standard crochet.
- 180-200 yards each of 2 contrasting colors of worsted-weight cotton; the shop sample uses Queensland Coastal Cotton.
- Tapestry / darning needle to weave in ends
- Mosaic Crochet Placemat pattern from Yarnspirations - free download
