Steeking: a word that strikes fear into the hearts of so many knitters!
Simply put, steeking is a way to work a project - usually a colorwork one - that avoids the need to do any stranded colorwork with purls. Any future openings are marked by panels of extra stitches; at the end of the project, these panels are reinforced and cut apart down the middle. Rather than embarking on a full project, we're going to get started on some cute, sheepy coasters!
After this class, you’ll be able to:
- identify situations where steeks are used and how to prepare for them
- reinforce steek panels with the crocheted method
- cut a steek
- finish steeked edges in a basic project
Skills required:
- cast on, knit, purl, bind off
- basic stranded colorwork
- reading a chart for working in the round
Required materials:
- 50 grams each of 2 colors of NON-superwash worsted-weight wool yarn (Berroco Lanas would be a great option!)
- The Sheepy Steeky Coasters pattern by Michele Bernstein (must be purchased in advance of class, either at home or through the shop)
- US7 / 4.5mm circular needles, 16"
- US E / 3.75mm crochet hook
- 4 stitch markers
- Darning needle
